@essendossev362
What's incredible about how she captures the normalcy of the characters is that they're so distinctly placed in time and place. What is normal in one time and place is utterly alien in another. That's the beauty of reading Jane Austin or Tolstoy, being able to compare what their lives were like then compared to our lives now, what still rings true, what's different. Through exploring what normalcy is now, she's effectively capturing a snapshot of that place and time for future readers.

@richcory7945
The last question she was asked about illness in her books is a good example of how her political beliefs twist the truth. Well maybe my truth I suppose. She says that individuals are powerless against illness and it just has to affect them and deal with it. In my experience that is not quite right. Physical illness such as lung cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, and heart disease, can be prevented in many, by not smoking, not drinking to excess and good diet and exercise. So the individual can improve their chance of avoiding these types of diseases. Not all obviously, as some diseases do strike out of the blue. Mental disorders can also be reduced by avoiding over stressful lifestyles such as drug abuse, and working for defined goals so that the individual is taking charge of their own life. Jordan Petersen's books give good examples of this. Her vaguely marxist interpretation of illness seems to deny the individual's ability to modify their own behaviour coupled with a belief that it is all the fault of capitalism anyway. She even brings in the possible collapse of the environment just to up the anxiety level. This "end of the world is nigh" approach is I think one of the causes of the high rates of anxiety and even suicide in some susceptible young people - especially young girls in the West. Social media is not helping here, as it acts as a kind of echo chamber of beliefs. Interesting how her characters seem rather vapid and bored and also rather unhappy. She equates this with "Normal people" which is true to an extent but thankfully not for most of us! Her dislike of individualism seems mirrored in her dislike of capitalism. The old communism versus democracy arguments of the cold war. Or is it a kind of false emotional reality versus a biological reality?

I recently read ‘Normal People’, and am close to finishing ‘Beautiful World, Where Are You’…and I absolutely adore both books and her writing style.

But it’s interesting seeing how divided people’s opinions on her are. I guess it makes sense, I can’t see her work being for everyone, but it just speaks to me in a very personal, profound way.

Sally Rooney’s Hate Is the New Normal
It is not easy to convince the Snapchat generation to read books. To do so, you must be a gifted writer and know which buttons to press in young people’s hearts. Sally Rooney, a young Irish author, is that kind of writer. Her first two books have won multiple awards and she is widely regarded as one of the most prominent voices of millennials.
Rooney is also very opinionated. She is a self-proclaimed Marxist and an avid supporter of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement (BDS). In line with her views, she has refused to sell translation rights to Israeli publishers. Because of her notoriety, her decision caused quite a stir. The New York Times stated, “Sally Rooney Declines to Sell Translation Rights to Israeli Publisher.” CNN echoed, “Sally Rooney refuses to sell Hebrew rights for latest book to Israeli publisher, citing political objections,” and other prominent news outlets also reported her decision.
In response, Israel's two largest bookstore chains announced that they would pull all of Rooney's titles from their shelves. This also caused a stir, though not as much. The BBC reported it, as did The Guardian and other British news outlets. Naturally, the Jewish press was all over the case, as well.
I sympathize with the response of the bookstore chains, just as I was in favor of banning other individuals and brands that boycott Israel. At the same time, I understand why they are doing this, and I am glad that it is causing a stir in Israel.
We can look the other way for only so long. At some point, we will have to ask ourselves why the world hates us, and it is better if we do it now than later.
We need to use such incidents constructively. By "constructively," I mean that we should use them as an impetus to return to the roots of our nation, to our fundamental principles of mutual responsibility and brotherly love. These are the building blocks of our nation, and these are the qualities that we lost long ago and for which we were exiled from Israel.
When we were cast as a nation that was to be “a light unto nations,” we were made to reflect the splendor of love of others to the entire world. Long before we gave the world Albert Einstein and Arthur Rubenstein, we gave it “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Granted, we did not quite manage to make it a reality, but the idea itself was, and still is, so novel, so unlike human nature, that to this day it seems undoable.
Still, the world will not leave us in peace until we begin to implement this very legacy we had left to humanity. Indeed, it makes perfect sense to demand that the progenitors of this sublime idea be the first to implement it.
The more the world becomes divided and hostile, the more it needs its opposite - love of others. The more people hate each other, the more they will demand that we love each other, and they will hate us for not doing so and setting an example for the world to follow.
In the near future, numerous celebrities, pundits, and politicians will declare their disapproval of Israel. They will not justify our existence as a sovereign state unless we justify it by setting an example of unity. Nothing else will satisfy them; nothing else will appease their hatred.

For more on this, see my publication The Jewish Choice: Unity or Anti-Semitism.

@bazuin45
The writer does not want her latest book, "Beautiful World, Where Are You?" to be translated into Hebrew.
She joins those who boycott Israel. During the last war with Hamas, she supported the murderous Islamic terrorists. She signed a letter accusing Israel of "apartheid" and calling for the country's international isolation. That anti-Israel attitude will tear her up badly, because Israel is the people of God, it is the apple of His eye. He promised the land to Abraham and his descendants. God spoke to Abraham thus: "Whoever blesses You will be blessed, but whoever curses You will himself be cursed. There is no future for those who hate Israel, for hatred of them is hatred of God.
Incidentally, her view has the tinge of anti-Semitism. Return to God

The interviewer talks way too much! I'm always stressed when Sally's answering that she will interrupt her. Maybe it's just me. Also please don't spoil the plot of another novel when discussing this novel. I know it's common practice in these panels because 'everyone' has read both books or 'everyone' is too wordly to care about the plot, but come on. Those two things are not necessarily true and you can make your point without spoiling the plot.

They come full circle and are healed and grown and ready to be their own person in the BBC version.
